Remote Access

All the primary computing systems and services offered by CRC are available to researchers who are working from off campus.

In fact, "remote" access workflows are often the same as best practices for using our resources.

For example:

  • It is almost always faster to transfer large datasets without having these pass through your personal computer. For more information, read about our Fast Data Transfer Services
  • Running a medium-sized data processing task is usually more reproducible and more efficient on a remote virtual machine, where you can better control the environment and scale resources as needed. For more information, see read about our Research VM's @ Rice
  • It is almost always faster and safer to store critical data on and access it from a manage data storage service, where backups and disaster recovery plans can be automated. For more information, read about our Research Data Storage services

Typically, Rice's research computing resources are most easily accessed via VPN, but the CRC also maintains other access points for specialized resources, as indicated by the below diagram of on- and off-premises resources.

For more information on optimal remote access methods for your research computing workflow, see the CRC's Remote Access Webinar, or reach out to us at researchcomputing@rice.edu.
